For me, one of those moments happened when my three-year-old daughter needed glasses.
What may have seemed like a simple appointment from the outside felt much bigger in real life. I watched her process something new, unfamiliar, and emotional. She was still so little, but I could see the worry. I could see the uncertainty. I could see the feeling every parent wants to protect their child from. The fear of being different.
As a mom, I wanted to help her feel proud of her glasses. I wanted her to see them as something normal, beautiful, and part of who she was.
So I started looking for books and activities that showed children wearing glasses in a positive way.
I wanted characters who looked like her.
Not side characters. Not background characters. Not the "smart kid" stereotype.

But I could not find what I was looking for.
The book I wished already existed
The idea for Lil Spectacles started from that gap.
I did not start as a publisher or children's book author. I started as a mom who saw a need and decided to create the book I wished already existed.
I wanted a coloring book where children with glasses could see themselves as the main character.
I wanted pages filled with kids who looked confident, creative, adventurous, silly, brave, and proud.
I wanted children to open a book and think:
"That looks like me."
That one thought may seem small, but for a child, it can mean everything.
The result was The Magic of Glasses. The first Lil Spectacles coloring book, and the one I made for my daughter.
Why glasses representation mattered to me
When a child gets glasses, adults often focus on the practical side.
Can they see better?
Are the frames comfortable?
Will they keep them on?
Do we need a backup pair?
Those things matter. But there is also an emotional side.
A child may wonder:
Will people notice?
Will they ask questions?
Will I look different?
Will I still feel like myself?
That emotional transition matters too.
I wanted Lil Spectacles to support that part of the journey. The part that helps children feel confident, not just corrected.
How Lil Spectacles grew
At first, the idea was simple: create a coloring book for kids who wear glasses.
But as the brand developed, the mission grew.
Because glasses are not the only thing that can make a child feel different.
Some children wear eye patches. Some use wheelchairs, elbow crutches, prosthetics, or other mobility aids. Some children rarely see characters who reflect their real lives in everyday books and activities.
That is why Lil Spectacles expanded beyond glasses.
